Crossfire logoThe latest update of the CrossFire Commander, version 7.1, is now available for download from the Mimas website at: http://www.mimas.ac.uk/crossfire/usingxf.html

Full installation instructions are also available via the above link.

Commander 7.1 is only available for Windows XP and Vista operating systems; Windows 2000 users should continue to use the previous version, Commander 7 SP2, which is still available for download via the link above. Mac users should continue to use Commander V6 SP1 which can also be downloaded via this link.

Commander 7.1 includes some bug fixes and a few enhancements, mainly relating to layout of the query window and ease of navigation of results; the functionality does not differ significantly from the previous version. However, the automatic nomenclature program AutoNom is no longer included due to changes in licensing. Users who wish to continue using AutoNom are advised not to upgrade from V7 SP2.

If you encounter any problems downloading, installing or using V7.1 please contact us.

FREE Online Book Trial

e-services No Comments »

FREE Online Books24×7 Trial until the end of April 2008.

Welsh Networking Limited (WNL) currently supplies the University with many online ICT and business eLearning courses and are currently considering adding the Books24×7 offering from ITPro to the services provided. WNL has negotiated a short trial period (until the end of April 2008) to evaluate the Books24×7 offering, and would be very grateful if staff at Swansea University were willing to assist us in assessing the level of interest in this service.Dubbed as ”the ultimate productivity solution for technology professionals” the ITPro solution delivers online the full contents of thousands of books and everything is searchable - great for instant self-directed learning, reference and assistance.  Use a carefully designed search term and you’ll get exactly the answers you want from the very latest books.

Recently added titles include:

  • Windows Vista Step by Step Deluxe Edition © 2008
  • 2007 Microsoft Office System Plain & Simple
  • Photoshop CS3 Bible

ICT end-user feedback includes:An extensive list of hits - very easy to access and use.  Very useful and would save an absolute fortune. Feedback from the Head of Systems at Swansea University:

It looks very comprehensive – as mentioned it’s missing the O’Reilly books (not surprisingly) but does include all the useful Novell and Microsoft ones.

How to Access the books

1.  Use your web-browser to visit http://www.books24×7.com/gatekeeper.asp?site=LKAHS

2.  Insert the details requested.

3.  Wait for the email  response that will give you instant access.

Your participation in this pilot  would be very helpful in assessing whether WNL goes ahead in providing this service. Taking a look at the titles available should not take you much time and may also prove to be extremely useful!

Request for Feedback

If you  have any comments with the trial please send feedback to me by 1 May 2008.  I shall co-ordinate the feedback and inform you of the outcome of the pilot and of opportunities that result from this.

Many thanks,

Chris

CDS Beyond 1st April 2008 and Resumption of ACD/I-Lab Service

e-services No Comments »

From the Chemical Database Service - DaresburyAs you may be aware the EPSRC has awarded the CDS group at Daresbury a

contract for chemical database provision to the UK community beyond

1st April 2008. This replaces the previous long lasting grant funding

arrangements, which terminated on the 31st March.

For further details follow the link:

http://cds.dl.ac.uk/cds/contract.html Current registered CDS users should see few immediate changes.Elibility and conditions of use of the Service have not been altered.

We do expect to make future changes in Service operations, and will

broadcast details of any of these which will directly affect our user

community.

There is, however, one major change which we have been able to

introduce from day one. We are pleased to announce the resumption of

an ACD/I-Labs service. A previous trial service for the I-Lab system

was held during summer 2006.

ACD/Labs Interactive Laboratory is an internet-based service that

allows you to get instant access to spectroscopy information, compound

name generation and property prediction programs.

For further details see the current I-Labs News file:

Important service enhancement for Index to Theses

e-services No Comments »

This week, Index to Theses (www.theses.com) launches an important enhancement to its web-based service that identifies and links to the full text availability of theses online (ETD - Electronic Theses and Dissertations).   For the majority of entries, where an ETD is not yet available, the new Index to Theses feature will describe alternative routes for obtaining the full text of theses from that university, including specific reference to the British Library’s British Theses Service.  A full guide to the new feature is available at www.theses.com/obtain.html  Index to Theses has identified some 3000 doctoral ETDs to date and this figure is estimated to be growing at around 100 per month. This growth is expected to increase significantly to represent an important percentage of the 1500 theses processed by Index to Theses each month.

Digitisation of theses covered by Index to Theses in the past will also yield full-text links and records will be regularly updated throughout the subscription year, reflecting current ETD availability. A number of UK institutions have already offered their help in ensuring that coverage is as complete as possible.

With some 517,000 entries - and growing at an annual rate of 18,000 - Index to Theses remains the most comprehensive listing of theses accepted for higher degrees by British and Irish universities. As such it continues to prove an exceptional reference tool for the hundreds of libraries and their patrons throughout the world who subscribe to both the print and online versions. www.theses.com
